Via life-sized video call on a large-screen TV, AIRAssist instantly connects you to your loved one who lives in an assisted living facility. You (or other approved friends and family) initiate the call, so your loved one never needs to handle a tv, remote control, or any other technology.
AIRAssist also allows you to control your loved one's TV remotely--including turning the TV on or off, changing the volume or channel, and programming television shows in advance.
Yes. If they are added to the approved caller list, AIRAssist allows facility staff to more quickly communicate with your loved one by enabling staff to initiate a video call.
Yes. In fact, ease of use is one of our primary goals. You have only to email a request to RAI, the Artificial Intelligence (AI) that makes everything work smoothly. If you can send an email, you can operate AIRAssist.
Yes. All video calls are encrypted, and AIRAssist only allows people on the approved call list to initiate a video call or remotely control the TV. Additionally, the person requesting the call is really asking the resident's TV to initiate the connection, meaning that video calls originate from the assisted living facility TV--not from outside. “The other day I asked my son Kevin if he would do a video call with his grandma and he said sure. I figured he’d talk to her for five minutes or so and that would be good. I talked to my mom an hour later and she said, ‘Kevin was here. We had a nice talk for about hour and he just left.’ I literally dropped to my knees and cried. My mom thought that Kevin had actually stopped by to visit her.”
This is what motivates Michael Nickley, a computer systems engineer for over three decades. “When it comes to calling Grandma, often people don’t know what to say. They are afraid they have nothing to talk about. The truth is that Grandma is just lonely. She wants human contact. With the AIRAssist video call, I can just ‘take Grandma for a walk’ with me. Her TV FaceTimes me on my iPhone and I go for a walk and show her the trees, and the birds, and path on my journey and she loves it. In this time of COVID, she can’t get out. But I can virtually take her anywhere.”
Recently, Mike’s sister did a video call with their mother and “took her all around town with her iPad. My mom got to talk to people on the walk, watch a guy catch some fish off the pier and even watched the sunset.”
Before creating AIRAssist, Michael designed and developed solutions for healthcare, education, security, and other industries—from small shops to Fortune 100 companies. Ten years ago he decided to create his own AI with an emphasis on natural language processing.
“After my dad passed, I wanted to find a better way to help my mom communicate with my family and me. Traditional phone calls were not enough. The challenge was to find a safe and secure way of creating a video call with Mom without her having to learn new technology. She could no longer answer her iPhone. I searched everywhere
for a solution and I could find none. So I went about building my own.”
During this time, he also discovered that his mother could no longer manage her TV remote; so, he decided to build something that would allow him to talk to his mother over her TV, as well as remotely control the TV itself. “What we have created with AIRAssist does just that and more,” Mike says. “It also allows my family and me to both schedule video calls and to control the TV by simply sending an email,” says Michael. “No app to install, no website to navigate, nothing new to learn. All I have to do is send an email saying ‘call me,’ and 30 seconds later I am life-size on Mom’s TV and she is smiling back at me.
“Another thing that is really special to me, is every morning I just send an email, “call me,” and I set my phone on the kitchen table and Mom has breakfast with me. She always says she loves to see my smiling face. Because I am life-size on her TV, I can sing to her and get her to exercise with me. She can mimic my movements as we do the ‘Hokey Pokey and turn ourselves around.’”
And that’s what it’s all about.
